The Theft of Unitos (#6)

Look Out Universe, Here Comes Cain

From the Crimson Files of 2chaotic.

Cain silently cursed under his breath. This would certainly be a hard mission, made even harder by all the chaos and destruction happening outside. The bombs and sounds of high-powered anti-air guns that surrounded the temple shielded what little noise he did make at least.

On paper it sounded simple. Sneak in to the Temple of Unitos, steal the Golden Sickle using the relic salvaged from a Crimson wreck.

The relic was a certain unique glove, taken from the hands of a general's body found in a Crimson Cruiser wreck. Scientists were stumped when the glove possessed no form of weaponry, considering that practically everything the Crimson ancients had made were directly or indirectly purposed for weapons. However, the cat was let out of the bag so to speak, when an on-ship Unitologist priest tried to bless the glove in order to "bring out it's glorious purpose". The glove grabbed the priest by the hand all on it's own, and turned the young priest into dried husk of a corpse in mere moments. It had literally drained the life out of him.

After testing it on numerous other imprisoned Unitologist, the glove had been deemed an anti-Unitology weapon.

Plans were set, and preparations made. The glove had to be tested on a Unitologist holy relic, and what better to use than the Golden Sickle?

Well, when you're facing the Unitologists, obviously, they don't leave important relics of Unitos unguarded. Especially something as important as the Glorious Sickle. It was said to contain the heart of Unitos himself, and whenever the Unitolgists came under attack, the glow of the Sickle marked the doom of the invaders, or so the legend goes.

Cain didn't really believe such nonsense, unlike most of his comrades who were screened for this mission. Maybe that was the reason he was picked. After all, when you need to steal a "holy" relic, who better to send than an atheist?

The Sickle was housed in the heart of the Temple, deep within the maze of security systems and armored monks who guarded it. One would have to have the best luck in the universe to sneak by all that undetected.

Or....a nice distraction.

The best possible thing could have happened the day of the mission. A powerful Unitologist decided his fellow believers weren't worthy of his presence anymore, and he backstabbed them in a most heinous way. With all the defenses of the Temple focused on preventing intrusion from the outside, Cain, who had already sneaked in the hours before, was almost able to causally stroll into the room where the Sickle lay.

"Too easy," Cain muttered. There had to be some sort of last defense around here, he thought, as he entered the enormous chamber.

The chamber was the size of an entire battleship's cargo area. It stretched for miles high, with beautiful ornate pillars dotting the ceiling. The floor was made of solid gold, that sparkled like the sun, prompting Cain to hide his eyes. And in the center of the room, high on a stair-step pedestal, sat the Golden Sickle, somehow floating ominously and glowing ever so slightly.

Cain suddenly grasped his arm. The glove upon his wrist was reacting to the Sickle. It literally dragged him towards it, pulsating in a blue hue with previously-unknown vigor.

As if on cue, monks armed with all sorts of fatal weaponry poured out from behind numerous pillars, all intent on the quick death of the invader. They shouted in unison, "Death to the enemies of Unitos!"

That was about the worst thing they could have done, apparently. The glove reared back of its own accord, and flashed brilliantly, temporarily blinding Cain.

The only thing he could perceive was the blood-curdling screams of hundreds of monks, all crying out in agony.

Then Cain's vision returned. All the monks...were gone. Just vanished into thin air.

Cain stared at the glove briefly, in awe of what had just happened. Then the glove violently dragged him across the floor towards the Golden Sickle.

The Golden Sickle slowly turned towards the glove, with the sharp point of it's curved blade pointed at Cain's head. In the blink of an eye, the Sickle shot towards Cain's mortal body, quite intent on showing just how mortal it was.

Right before it could though, the glove just flew all the faster, and caught the sickle in it's grasp. The sickle tried desperately to free itself, but the glove held tight. Lightning shot from the sickle, and the air started swirling around Cain, quickly turning into a malevolent vortex.

However, just as suddenly as it started, the madness ended, leaving Cain holding the now-dimmed Sickle in the glove on his hand.

He had done it. Somehow, he had stolen the Golden Sickle straight out from under the Unitology's righteous nose.

Suddenly, more armed monks started pouring into the chamber, pointing their guns at Cain. One of them shrieked, "HE'S GOT THE GOLDEN SICKLE! HOW CAN THIS BE?! NO MORTAL HAS EVER HELD IT AND LIVED!"

Cain wasn't hearing them though. He was focusing more on the sudden influx of raw power coursing through his veins.

He hadn't been a believe in all this religion stuff before, but when a slash of the sickle sent raw lightning into the crowd of stunned monks, Cain became a firm believer in the gods.

Thanks to the power of the sickle, the Crimson Nation spy deftly exited the way he came, slaughtering the ranks of Unitologists as he went. He made it safely back to his ship, and stealthily sailed away from the carnage erupting around the Temple since a rebel Battleship had started hovering above it.

Cain laughed manically as he felt the Sickle's power infecting his mind. With it, came a voice. It whispered, "How...dare you treat...me...as merely...a tool...mortal. I will...consume you." Then the whisper became a roar, "I AM UNITOS!" The Sickle tried again to free itself from the glove, and it started glowing again.

Another voice boomed back, "SILENCE WEAKLING. I, QUAX, HAVE FINALLY FOUND YOUR PITIFUL MANIFESTATION IN THIS REALM. YOUR SOUL IS MINE!"

The glove shined brightly in response, and the Sickle dimmed once again.

Cain laughed all the harder as a small fighter wing began following him. A wave of concussive force erupted from behind his ship, and slammed into the fighters, blowing most of them up, and wounding the rest.

They gave up their chase after seeing such power.

In Cain's mind, he could only think about what he had just accomplished as he left the planet's orbit. With the help of this Quax person and their glove, He had just stolen Unitos himself.

And he knew just what he was going to do....

Use Unitos's stolen power to convert his fellow Crimsons, and then force them to make him their leader.

The flag of Unitos would be flown. That much was sure.

But now...instead of a pure white...

The flag was bloodied. It was now Crimson.

One Man's Universe May Be Another Child's Sandbox

Subject: Theology, Philosophy

Dear Associates, Professors, Scholars, Friends, Colleagues:

Volumes have been written about the true nature of Unitos, a life form that transcends space and time in a manner similar to the beings known as Quax and Bane. The very existence of such creatures, beings with the ability to destroy and remake the world at their leisure, lends itself to such speculation. I have spent the last forty years of my life studying Unitos, the First One. After so many years of searching, I believe that I have discovered what may be the truth about this divine spirit.

The Church of Unitology, while claiming to be the sole source of knowledge and records about Unitos, has lately been hesitant to supply their records and holy texts to inquiring scholars, possibly resulting from the recent remilitarization of the Unitology and the rebirth of nationalism and expansionism. Consequently, this research has relied on information the Church released into the public years ago, as well as scattered reports from individuals who claim to have witnessed Unitos himself.

Unitos, much the same as His counterpart Quax, has been instrumental in the formation of the Universe. While Quax is seen as the Destroyer, the one who will inevitably bring the Universe as we know it to a climactic end, Unitos is the Creator, the one who shapes galaxies and gives life. Many have proposed that these two are the same being. I am inclined to agree with this theory, as it is a logical basis for the conclusion I have reached.

Unitos, and Quax if they are indeed two sides of the same being, is much like a child. At a whim, this god could destroy the Universe and all life within it, and the very next instant create a whole new dimension, entirely different from our own. A parallel is easily drawn between these actions by Unitos and a child at play with building blocks. Whenever a construction displeases the child, he or she tears it apart to create something new, something different, akin to Unitos destroying and remaking the Universe to His liking. Such a concept is supported by ruins found on dead worlds, which point to individual factions taking control of the galaxy, causing a rapid decrease in the number of battles going on as one side wipes out all others. This, as well as the subsequent reformation, could indicate that Unitos became bored with the stagnation of His galaxy, and thus remade the Universe into something more interesting.

Another example of Unitos's childlike behavior is the rivalry between Him and Bane, the Ascended One. After the great battle between Unitos and Bane, in which Bane was the victor (followers of Bane refer to this battle as "The Great Bitchslapping"), Unitos disappeared from the galaxy, during which time Bane ruled. This is akin to a child crying and sulking in his or her room after being punished.

A third and final example lies in the manner of the Church of Unitology itself. Recently, a spokesperson for the Church, who called himself "The Sniper" (another sign of the remilitarization of the Church) claimed that shiny things such as medals pleased Unitos. This reflects in the construction of the churches and cathedrals themselves, which are covered in gold, silver, and jewels. It was originally believed that this was done to convince outsiders of the splendor and glory of Unitos, but may in fact be in accordance with the will of Unitos himself.

All of this has forced me to conclude that Unitos is something akin to a child at play. This may be simple speculation, but if the evidence at hand is considered worthy by the University, then I humbly request for a research grant to continue my studies. Thank you all, and good evening.

Note: Research grant has been delayed, pending an outstanding warrant for Dr. Rold's arrest after he was accused of molesting a 12-year old boy.

Looking at the back of the doctor Troy complained, “This place is just awful. The living quarters are cramped and the food is disgusting. The people are filthy and are quite savage. Not to mention the equipment they use seems like things that were used back in my grandfather’s time.” Walking through the halls of the Observatory, Troy tried to keep up with withered old man in front of him. Dr. Harrison walked with a purpose, and it was hard to keep pace carrying the equipment to the viewing chamber.

Not looking back Dr. Harrison replied, “Mr. Denton you must understand that to be a scientist, you must sometimes be forced to go places and do things that you normally wouldn’t do. I made it very clear when you accepted my apprenticeship that I would spend no time hearing your bickering. Now come, we must be swift in our actions so that we may go unnoticed.

In the viewing room, Dr. Harrison opened up a cryogenic suitcase to reveal a half damaged chunk of gadgetry that had a faint glow to it. With his arms spread open Dr Harrison said, “This is what I wanted to show you.”

“Wha…..what is it,” asked Troy. “It’s the thing that brought us here.” replied Dr. Harrison. “The commoners call it crimson technology. They are relics from an old alien race that use to inhabit this galaxy. These relics hold great power, power that everyone wants to uncover. Simply put, they are what brought us here and they are what can take us home.”

“So that means everyone is gonna want them right?” asked Troy.

“Precisely, Mr. Denton.” Dr Harrison replied. “The factions have been searching diligently for crimson remains and are having quite the success. Knowing them, they will probably be careless and ruin valuable data that can be uncovered and that cannot happen.”

“So how are we going to stop them?” Troy asked.

“Well here is one alternative,” Dr. Harrison replied. He brought up a galaxy map on the vid screen. On it they were four locations that were marked. “These planets hold a vast amount of crimson technology.”

“How do you know that?” asked Troy.

“Because these are the locations of the faction homeworlds.” replied Dr. Harrison.

“Ok, so which faction does this planet belong to?” Troy asked as he selected the location on the far left.

“That is Felicity, one of the Institution homeworlds.” the doctor replied. “I’ve heard that it’s a very phenomenal place. It is said that the worlds best Technology comes from there. Can you believe these people were once extremely militaristic? They originally laid claim to the leadership of the expedition to colonize this galaxy. After the incident they switched their obsession to the study of science. An obsession, that hasn’t failed them just yet. ” He pointed to the far right of the map and said, “And this all the way over here is Underground space. They are like the exact opposite of the Institution.”

Watching the vid screen zoom in on the location, Troy listened intently.

“Now these guys are pretty full of themselves.” explained Dr. Harrison. “They think that the whole galaxy belongs to them and they intend to take it, too. They also take pride in their military. It is truly one of the finest I have ever seen. Not to mention their homeworlds are like fortresses. Now if you look above those two you will find the Unitology faction. ”

“What are they all about,” Troy asked.

“They are religious folk who worship some god called 'Unitos,' and strive to convert the remainder of the galaxy to their belief,” the doctor replied. “They’re kind of crazy if you ask me. Never cross them or they will swarm you like a hornets nest.

Clearing his voice Troy said, “So we don’t want to mess with them. Got it.” Pointing to the bottom of the screen he said, “What I really want to know is why you left this faction out and why they have a circle around them.”

“Patience,” Dr Harrison replied. “I was getting to them. We are looking at 'Temple of Ombros,' one of the main hubs to the Crimson Nation faction, and where they first discovered crimson technology. They are crimson-worshipping people. They are obsessed with it. They will probably search out the crimson relics just so they can use them in their ceremonies. They live for the stuff, even though they can't understand what it means, and they don’t care what happens with it as long as they get credit for discovering more of it. They are desperate to revive the Crimson Moon civilization, and will believe anyone who can convince them they understand it. With this said, the reason they have a big circle is because we are going there first.”

“WHAT!!!!!!!!!!” Troy exclaimed. “Why do we have to travel to the factions?”

“The factions cannot be trusted with these relics,” the doctor replied. “They will probably use its powers to try to conquer the galaxy. I intend to take the relics from them and put them to good use. I intend to find us a way back home.”

“When the factions find out the relics they found have been stolen they will think the other factions did it.” Troy explained. “They will want war.”

With a smirk Dr. Harrison replied, “What better way to make our task easier than to have WARRING FACTIONS.”
